Difference between downloads and installs for apps

An app is a collection of computer programs designed to help the end user solve many problems from a single user interface UI. These programs then communicate and coordinate with one another to carry out tasks, functions or activities.

An app needs programs to exist and function to carry out all that the end user commands. Windows 10 operating system carries a massive collection of programs and apps. It works to execute those commands and undertakes functions with the help of hardware such as RAM, HDD, and external peripherals, bringing everything together. A game like Minecraft is an app, and it is not concerned with running too many aspects of your computer. Minecraft needs Windows 10 to work and cannot exist or function without it.

On a related note, apps further divide into web apps, computer apps, and mobile apps. For example, you can use the Gmail app on your mobile and web but not on your computer. It is a web and mobile app but not a Windows app. We know applications are programs. Are they the only type of programs in Windows 10?

There are system programs as well which are designed to work with other systems or programs. Some examples include networking system, servers, drivers, firmware, and others. To better understand it, think of it this way. You want to use an app, but the app itself needs other programs to operate.

In other words, you want to watch a movie in VLC app but the video player itself needs audio and video drivers to function. Another distinction is that an app has a user interface because it is designed to be used by a real person, but a program may or may not need a UI to function.

The lines between what is an application and what is a program have blurred over the years. Most people use these terms interchangeably. They intersect each other many times but are not exactly synonymous.

The app, if it is still able to run, might be unable to find some of its components and show random errors. A portable app will not remember you personal preferences and settings. These may include recent or frequently accessed files and directories among other things. One of the biggest advantages of installing an app is that you can customize it to work how you want it to.

Photoshop is an excellent example of an app that you will set up to function in a certain way. If you had to set it up over and over again, it would be time consuming. The install version remembers which tools you use and which toolbars and windows to show you when you open it. A portable app can be run from an external source. You can run it from a USB without needing to copy it to your local disk. An installable app cannot run unless you install it first. It cannot be installed on an external storage device.

Some apps will insist they be installed to the same drive as the one you have installed Windows on. A portable app is unlikely to damage critical files on your system. There is always the chance that a malicious file might be bundled in the EXE file but that comes down to the app itself coming from an unreliable source.

Installing an app may result in damage to critical files on your system simply because the app is allowed to modify them and does so in order to be properly set up. Get daily tips in your inbox Newsletter. Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.
