Fuqua, the prototypical journeyman who never climbs over a script, does not offer you a modern spin on this past-its-prime genre so far as an upgrade to this mid 90's, straight down to the 35mm Panavision camerawork and a score from the late James Horner, finished from the composer's longtime producer and arranger, Simon Franglen. There's some good to this Magnificent Seven's dedication to an aesthetic which recalls the days when its under 13 rating nonetheless represented a particular category of Hollywood amusement; to get you personally, Fuqua and cinematographer Mauro Fiore really bother to frame shots of people getting hit by gunfire.
But though it's its fine moments - just like a shot of Chisholm on horseback against a bluish dusk, dressed head to toe in black - the one thing animating the film is that the internal battle between the rote and the strained, the dull accumulation to the last showdown and the cookie-cutter anti-corporate motif. But it's so chaotic and protracted as to lose much of its punch. If the sight of Denzel Washington, guns blazing and saddled up for his first western, doesn't get your pulse racing, read elsewhere. You could do worse than putting it all in the capable hands of Denzel Washington, with some help from Chris Pratt.
Long on violence and short on story, character development, motivation, and all the things that make any kind of violence satisfying to watch. The Magnificent Seven is a cast and a title in search of a movie.
Not only did they not find one, I'm not certain they even looked.
